Asteroid (12171) Johannink
Asteroid (12171) Johannink = 2382 T-3 = 1998 HC45 = T/2382 T-3
was discovered at Palomar on 1977-10-16 by C. J. van Houten, I. van Houten-Groeneveld and T. Gehrels.
The name of the asteroid was suggested by K. Miskotte. Carl F. Johannink (* 1959) is a Dutch high-school teacher and amateur astronomer. His main interests lie in meteor astronomy. He is a very prolific meteor observer, active within the Dutch Meteor Society.
In order to demonstrate the performance of the Faulkes Telescopes, we accepted a proposal from our Dutch partners to take asteroid Johannink with the 2-meter Faulkes Telescope South in Siding Spring/Australia on March 28 and 29, 2020: one image each with an exposure time of 180 Seconds, red filter and automatic dark, bias and flat correction.
During these days, the asteroid Johannink passed the constellation Cancer north of the beautiful galaxy NGC 2581, which was discovered in 1885 by the French astronomer Edouard Stephan.
Johannink is an asteroid of the main belt with an average diameter of 5.6 km and a period of 4.53 years.
